Moldovan Jailed For Attempt To Bribe Police Officers

On 11 May 2017, one Belousova Natalia from Moldova was sentenced to four weeks’ imprisonment for attempting to bribe three police officers.

2. Belousova Natalia had earlier been charged in Court on 13 April 2017 with one count of corruptly offering gratification to police officers Assistant Superintendent of Police Chan Wai Hoong, Station Inspector Ng Bak Guan and Corporal Yau Kwai Yung, as an inducement to be released from police custody, an offence punishable under Section 6(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 241.

The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) had received information on 11 April 2017 that Belousova Natalia had offered gratification of an unspecified amount to the police officers while being arrested for suspected vice activity at Swissotel Stamford. Investigations revealed that Belousova Natalia had offered “money and gifts” to all three police officers in exchange for her release from police custody. This was despite being warned that it is an offence to bribe police officers in Singapore.

4. In Singapore, it is an offence to bribe, or attempt to bribe public officers. Any person who is convicted of a corruption offence can be fined up to $100,000 or sentenced to imprisonment of up to five years or to both.

5. Singapore adopts a zero tolerance approach towards corruption. The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau takes a serious view of any corrupt practices and will not hesitate to take action against any party involved in such acts.
