Vehicle Inspector Facing Corruption Charges

The accused, Md Daud bin Nadzim, is a 45 year-old Singaporean.

2. Investigation revealed that the accused was employed by STA Inspection Pte Ltd (“STAI”) as a Principal Vehicle Inspector. It is alleged that between October 2009 and March 2010, the accused had corruptly received gratifications from motor vehicle workshops, namely, Lim Tan Motor Pte Ltd, Zero Gravity, X-Factor Motorworkz, Cheng Auto Enterprise, Aspec Carcare Centre, Man Exhaust Works, CL Garage, Halland Motor Services, TK Motor Workshop and Boon Siong Vehicle Service, in return for refraining from carrying out stringent physical inspection of 35 vehicles which had illegal modifications done.

3. The accused was charged in court on 21st January 2011 for:

a) 26 counts of corruptly obtaining gratifications totaling $1,295/-, under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Cap 241;

b) 2 counts of abetting the offence of corruptly obtaining gratifications totaling $90/-, under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Cap 241, read with Section 29 of the same Act; and

c) 2 counts of corruptly obtaining gratifications totaling $290/- in furtherance of common intention with two other persons, under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Cap 241, read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, Cap 224.

4. The punishment for offences under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Cap 241 is a fine not exceeding $100,000/- or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years or to both.

5. More accused persons relating to this case will be charged in court at a later stage.

6. The use of illegally modified and un-roadworthy vehicles poses a danger to all road users and the public.
